The VTT 5G/6G test network

The VTT 5G/6G test network ( https://www.6gtnf.fi/vtt/ ) supports versatile deployment and testing of vertical industry use cases, offering both commercial- grade and open-source 4G, 5G SA, and beyond components. This network functions as an independent operator, providing SIM cards and facilitating advanced 5G and early 6G technology demonstrations, performance measurements, and interoperability tests. The network incorporates technologies such as 5G NR FR2, O-RAN RIC, DLaaS, QKD, MEC ML/AI, and FPGA- accelerated platforms.

Specifically, VTT provides access to the Connectivity Testbed with the latest edge computing development tools and 5G evolution network technology updates, enabling the validation of edge AI chip-based solutions with the latest mobile communication technologies.

Schematic description of the VTT 5G/6G Test Network

Key features of VTT Espoo site are:

  • 5G SA + NSA and LTE equipment from Nokia

  • Mainly using Open5GS as the core

  • Support for different operating environments: outdoor including mmW, dense indoor office, underground tunnel, and lab environment.

  • Supported frequencies:

    o Indoor: B1 (10 MHz), B3 (5 MHz), B7 (10 MHz), n78 (60 MHz)
    o Outdoor: B1 (4.8 MHz), n78 (60 MHz), n258 (400 MHz, shared with Aalto University) o Applying for n77 (100 MHz)

  • AccelleRAN ORAN technology with outdoor and indoor cells on 5G SA band n77 Correspondingly, key features of VTT Oulu site are:

  • 5G NR and 4G LTE RAN solutions from Nokia

  • Supported frequencies:

    o Outdoor: 5G mMIMO (n78 / 60 MHz, n7 / 10 MHz, n77 / 2x100MHz), 4G (B3 / 5 MHz), 4G (CIoT, B28 / 3 MHz, B31 / 5 MHz), 4G MiniMacros, 5G mmWave (n258 / 800 MHz)

    o Indoor: 4G small cells (B1 / 10 MHz, B3 / 5 MHz, B7 / 10 MHz), 5G small cells (n78 / 60 MHz)

  • AccelleRAN ORAN technology with outdoor and indoor cells on 5G SA band n77

  • srsRan open-source environment for indoor with SDR units

  • SDR solutions:

    o Multiple Ettus USRP SDR devices

    o Keysight SDR v.4 RF Unit 4 Layer 6 GHz 100 MHz BW, LTE RF Unit 1 Cell (2×2 MIMO), SDRv3

  • MEC AI/ML unit based on a high-performance Dell multiprocessor with Nvidia AI accelerators
